BBC's "Toughest Place to Be" - A must watch for Every Filipino

This weekend, I was able to spare some time browsing the net and came upon some thought provoking videos about a program in the British Channel BBC titled The Toughest Place to be. I watched all six videos with almost 10 minutes each and was appalled with Philippine's condition. The second worker was sent to Manila, Philippines to perform his work as a bus driver.

His name was Josh West from London. After watching, I researched for the videos online and found out that BBC is only showing the programme in London. I wish these videos could also be shown in the Philippines to make all Filipinos realize how revolting it is to live in the conditions of being a very poor Filipino. I was deeply heartbroken watching it and wish that by sharing this videos would give our corrupt government a jolt and make them see how oppressed the poor are. I myself came from a poor family but got educated and is now living more decent than most Pinoys living in slums. After watching, I reflected much on my life and made me think that with all the challenges I face right now, I am still lucky than most people. Watch the videos below and make sure to finish all six and let me know what you think and feel about being a Filipino.

BBC's Toughest Place to be - A Bus Driver

Three British workers. Experienced. Qualified. And looking for a challenge. They are on a quest to find out what it would be like to do their job under some of the toughest conditions on the planet.
These British workers travel to countries thousands of miles away, to live with local people, and do their own jobs, under some of the toughest conditions on earth.
Angie is a paramedic going to Guatemala, Josh a bus driver going to the Philippines and Suzanne is a midwife going to Liberia.

In the second program in the series where British workers accept the challenge to do their jobs in some of the toughest conditions in the world, London bus driver Josh West heads to Manila, the capital of the Philippines and the most densely populated city on Earth.  Josh will be driving a Jeepney, a colourfully decorated, adapted jeep which has no power steering, dodgy lights and an uncomfortable seat.

His host is Rogelio Castro and together they brave the chaos of the streets. It's a hair-raising and often hilarious ride, but Josh also learns about the incredible over-crowding and devastating poverty of Manila. He forms a strong bond with Rogelio and is moved by the daily struggle of an ordinary Filipino working to feed his family.

It's an emotional roller coaster and Josh returns a changed man, aware that all the separates his life from Rogelio's is the country he happened to be born in.

What is a blog and why do I blog?

I recently felt concerned at a comment a friend made on her blog.
"With reyna's blog kasi parang DAPAT I-FOLLOW kasi sya palang kilala kong blogger. honestly, if she isn’t my friend, i wouldn’t link her here."
Jeeesh! I never even asked her to link me up so why the comment like that? You have your free will naman to link kung sino gusto mo i link or not. She can remove me from her list and that will be fine with me. Di nya kelangan pilitin sarili nya just because she knows me.

I had to re read her blog post thrice to understand her opinions. Yeah, I get it. She was tired of seeing commercialized and monetized blogs. But I somehow felt it was a direct hit for me.

She wrote:
So I had to post a comment and react. I didn't think it would take this long.
I used to write just to rant. It was during the time when I was the only one reading my blog. I wrote useless pathetic diary like rants of how happy I was for a sweet corn, how tired I was of my call center job, how angry I was at my brother or how I hated my friend's boyfriend. Reading back, I'd think these anecdotes are funny.
Even if we say that people shouldn't judge other people, we can't change the fact that what we wrote today about some gross story about something we did before....... may somehow one day be used against us specially if one will think career wise. The internet is a powerful tool. To each our own kung anu anong info ang pwede naten i share sa world of blogging. But you also need to remember that Blogs are public space. It's like writing your story sa bulletin board where everyone can hear or read you. Nasa sa iyo ang decision if what you wrote is how you want to be portrayed to the world and if sa tingin mo your reader's can learn or benefit from everything you said.

Why do I blog? After I bought my own domain and paid for space to be heard (or listened or read)...... I came to the decision to post only topics and infos that can de-clutter my head from work, bring smile to my readers and share infos of what I learned. Meeting a few blogging friends and getting invites and freebies from events are also a few of the added perks of blogging.

Chatting is different from blogging. Writing from the heart is also different from writing with content. If you are the only one reading your blog, keep a diary. If you need an update central for your friends, chatmates, and relatives keep a social networking site and post alot of pics. But if you would like to share and write infos worth of your reader's stay in your web space and keep them coming back because they like what you wrote and they learned something, maintain a blog with useful content.

If you wanna know more about me, in a very personal level, you should meet me in person. Coffee tayo and let's share stories. ^_^
Some strong words you might say. Maybe I had to be mentioned in her blog and in her words "publicly criticized" to come out where I was hiding and blurt my brains out. Reading her post somehow gave me a challenge. I have been away from blogging for a month. Simply because I refuse to write while I was sad and emotionally stricken. I am still not ok. I am still lovesick.... but I will try to post more these coming days.

So going back to my title.... what is a blog?
Blogs are websites that are organized by blog posts. Anyone with an idea can start a new blog with the click of a button and share individual news stories. Blogs should reflect your unique perspective. Blogs give people like us the power of the media.

So with that said, maybe we can reflect on what are the topics we could write about. Some blogs just contain emotional rumblings... some readers can relate to that... but have we learned anything? I can say that you write well and compose great paragraphs and coherent thoughts yeah. But after reading, did it help me in some ways?

After diving into the blogging fad, I guess we should also know how to make the most of our blog. For me, I always try to put myself in my reader's shoes as someone looking for information. My blog right now maybe a smorgasboard of information since I am fascinated about alot of things. But there are a few niches enumerated by Calvin at Most Lucrative Niches for Casual Blog that you will find helpful in your blog.

Here is a very informative video for those who have no idea what a blog is and how to start one.

Have a good day! ^_^

Postcripts To A BloodBath... Aug. 23, 2010 Quirino Grandstand Bus Hostage Drama

I would like to share an article circulating online on facebook and blogs. I am not sure if this one is authentic and if Mr. Bang Lu Min really exist as one of the survivors..... But what the heck.... read on and feel the goosebumps.... (the same goosebumps I felt when I heard Ms. Venus Raj's Major Major! ^_^ )

Mr. Mendoza was already upset even before he saw on television what the policemen did to his brother. The other tourists who remained inside the bus were complaining. Wei Ji Jiang wanted to go to the bathroom. Dao Chi Yu was hungry and the rest were just groaning and whining like they have forgotten that our lives rest in Mr. Mendoza's hands. The hostage taker, as you know him was really nice. He treated us okay and even let the elders and the children leave the bus. He said your policemen treated him unfairly. He was a policeman too and was accused of doing something he had no knowledge of. But your government didn't listen so he used us to get everyone's attention.
Things would have never turned for the worst if he didn't see how his family was dragged out of their house and taken into custody. He was watching the news all the time as we huddled around each other behind the bus. He shouted some words in your language then started shooting in the air. A girl about my age started screaming. Mr. Mendoza demanded her to stop but she didn't understand English. God, he had to slash her neck with a knife just to put her to rest. Her boyfriend who tried to hit him was shot in the head. Tension was rising. You can see in his face how scared and confused he was.
The bus driver ran away leaving him alone with strangers from a distant land. I can see him walking across the aisle, sometimes pointing his machine gun to one of the tourists. But he tried his best not to hurt us, especially those who really cooperate. I guess its in your nature not to inflict pain on others unless it was necessary. I remember him saying that he will free us before sundown and implored us to forget everything when we return home. But his words don't matter now. The policemen were trying to force their way in, while we all lied down to shield ourselves from bullets. Mister Mendoza blindly shoots at his enemies which I think kept them from rescuing us. I hear sobs under the chairs. Some were even shouting the names of their loved ones even when the air merely eat their words. Kevin Tang tried to escape when the glass door was was shattered, but one shot and he slumped on the floor with blood gushing from his mouth. Heavy rain pitter-pattered on the rooftop. In old Chinese saying, it means an end to a struggle.
Finally, somebody was able to open the escape hatch at the back of the bus. Freedom. But I knew Mister Mendoza was still alive. I knew he was just waiting for a chance to strike back at his enemies. So I told those around me not to escape. Let the authorities come for us instead. Then there was gunfire. He was firing at his enemies with a machine gun. Those who were at the escape hatch fled abandoning us once again. It's like a nightmare with no end and to wake up means a certain death.
Then somebody from outside the bus threw a canister. It forced out a black smoke that is so painful to the eyes and putrid smelling to the nose. People started screaming. We cannot breathe. Some ran in front of the bus but Mister Mendoza warned them of stray bullets. It was too late. One was hit on the head, the other was hit on the shoulders. Bullets were now flying. Its like the authorities thought we were all dead. Mister Mendoza finally admits his mistake and said sorry to everyone, dead or alive. He then ran towards the front of the bus where he would meet his maker. As he passed by my chair with bullets whistling overhead, I clutched my hand on the velvet curtain and wrapped it around my face. All I could think of was to stay alive - for my child who is waiting for me back in Xinjang. I know I will survive, I will come home.
- Bang Lu Min Survivor, Quirino Bloodbath
I found a very gruesome picture of how the hostage taker's life ended.....

Very disturbing........
When you see it.... You'll Shit Brix!
 Sadako finished him off.  ^_^

Traffic in Makati at 8pm?!!!

Start na ng tag-ulan sa Manila..... and super grabeh ang traffic kagabi!.... My usual commute time from work to where I live is only 15 minutes and yet it took me 1 hour and P160 cab fare last night due to uber traffic!.....
Halos hindi na umuusad yung cab namen so I snapped a pic.

Running Dreams and ACL

Day 2 and Day 3 of my goal was fine. Although I had some difficulties (waking up and my hubby telling me to stay)......, I was able to get up and walk. Yes, I am only walking for exercises. I'm afraid to cause more injury to my ACL.

What Is Torn ACL ?
ACL - Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Without surgery, a person with a torn ACL is at risk for repeated knee instability. Each time the knee gives out, there is a risk of increased damage to the meniscal or surface cartilage in the knee, which is extremely difficult to repair and can cause arthritis later in life. But, Surgical treatment for a torn ACL is not always necessary.
Although surgical intervention often leads to complete success, not everyone needs the ligament to return to his or her pre-injury level of function.
If you don’t do sports that require an ACL , and you don’t have an unstable knee , then you may not need ACL surgery. One type of graft used to replace the torn ACL is the patellar tendon . This tendon connects the kneecap ( patella ) to the tibia.  ACL injuries typically occur with a twisting or pivoting motion or a direct blow to the knee. A lot of these injuries occur during high impact sports like football, soccer, tennis or running at a high speed.   - ACL-tear
I am not an athlete nor a very active person but my ACL injury last December 2006 was caused by slipping at the back of a passenger Toyota Revo. It was raining and the small foot trail was wet. As I was getting out, I suddenly lost balance and slipped on my left foot. The full weight of my body pressing down on my left leg. Upon impact on the pavement, I heard a loud popping sound kind of like bones snapping. I landed on my back and good thing since I was carrying a big duffel bag, this served as a cushion on my back and spine. I howled in pain when the driver attempted to help me stand. Upto now, whenever I think about that experience, "nangingilo ngipin ko" just remembering the pain.

Dripping wet because of the rain while I was in pain, I was rushed to the nearest public hospital where I waited 2 hours before I was attended to. (This is after I bitched about the hospital nurses not doing their job). They did x-ray and said no bones was fructured and said it was only a sprain and I should be back on my feet within 3 days. (It was a lie! I was not able to walk within 3 days!)

I tried to walk but my left knee buckled and gave way. I knew there was something seriously wrong. I told my mom to find a taxi and at 4am, I wanted us to go to Makati Med to get a second opinion and the best medical care. At the Makati Med, they re did an xray, inserted some intra-venous pain medicine and checked the swelling on my knee. At the wee hours of the morning, they had to call another doctor, an orthopedic doctor to examine. The next day, I was told to have an MRI. (This is like an xray but instead of bones, it would show you a picture of tissues, muscles and ligament section by section). The orthopedic doctor said it was an ACL tear. This is the first time I heard about it. He explained to my mom and me what this is about. ACL has no cure. It doesnt heal on it's own technically. The only process to get the knee to perform how it used to be is to get it surgically fixed. This elaborate surgery has an option to get a replacement from a cadaver or from your own hamstring tendons. I was worried that I would not be able to walk again ever!.... I had an assurance from the doctor that I will still be able to walk but this needs physical therapy and I can forego the surgery. But! But, I should not do any athletic activities like, running, basketball, tennis, dancing or activities that will require my knee to pivot or twist. Or I risk getting my other ligaments injured.

For 2 weeks, I needed wheel-chair to go around. I even needed someone to accompany me in peeing. I needed someone to do things for me like processing HMO papers, since I can't walk. I can only crawl that time. Good thing I had the most loving mother who endured all my bitchyness during these times. Yes, emotional time brought out all the evil in me. I was not able to go to work for weeks. I can't go to the comfort room and pee because squatting or bending my knee to sit is painful. I can't help around the house. Since I was also the breadwinner for the family, I feared I could not work again. Being alone in the house was unbearable during those times. I even thought about killing myself if I wont be able to get back up and work.

I did 1 month of physical therapy and slowly, I was able to walk straight again. Although sometimes, my knees would wobble I am just happy that God allowed me to walk again. Prayers from my mom might have worked so much on it. Sometimes, being a clumsy person that I am, I have slipped and sprain again my knees for like 3 times over these past years. Each time getting my mom soo worried. Once, I was alone in the house and slipped, I thought I was seriously injured again. It took me 1 hour before I was able to get up. Although that unforgettable injury was years ago, because I refused to get my ACL fixed through surgery, they are still not stable. I am still not able to do pivots and forever will not be able to play tennis (I so love to learn how to play this sport).

I am still researching if I can join running events. For now, I will stick to brisk walking to get fit. Maybe after a few months of getting my knees to walk long distances it would cooperate with me in my goal to jog a little then be able to run.

Fly Away...

Waaah! as I was trying to refill her food bowl, nakawala yung nag iisang pet na lovebird!!! Lagot ako ke mama.... T_T.... pero why wala ako panghihinayang?.... Maybe because I want her to be free... I want her to find her love. Sabi kasi nila, namamatay ang lovebird sa lungkot pag mag isa. I'd rather let her free than see her die.

SM Grocery Scene after Typhoon Ondoy

I went to SM Supermarket tonight before I go home. I was hoping to buy some candles and food supplies. There are alot of people. I waited for an hour before I can get to the cashier to pay. Badtrip! Offline pa ang BDO!
Bought food supplies, candles and canned goods.

Typhoon Ondoy Strucks Metro Manila

This post is dedicated to the people and families who are currently suffering from the devastation brought by Typhoon Ondoy on Saturday Sept 26, 2009.

Last Saturday, Sept 26, I woke up around 12 noon to my mom shouting, "Nak, lakas ng ulan, tingnan mo kalsada... baha na... swimming pool na!" Lo and behold, the street that we usually have no problems during typhoon season is now knee-depth flooded. I did not mind the flooded street. Inisip ko, huhupa din yan, and we are on the second floor. I sat infront of the computer and opened my facebook account. I chatted with some friends then around 2pm, nag brown out! I was feeling kind of inis. The rain gradually stopped but I am stuck at home with no electricity and no internet. Akala ko babalik na kaagad ang kuryente but after a few hours, around 6pm we still have no electricity. I also failed to use my cellphone yesterday kahit na naka unli calls because I was too lazy to charge it, drained ang battery.
My brother who is a fastfood Manager in Diego Silang, Taguig called and said that their store is currently facing difficulty due to floods na hanggang bewang! Motorists have been stuck in traffic and have no way out of their cars. He also said that 3 cars on their basement parking area have been submerged in flood waters.

Underpass in Ayala Avenue, Makati City

Walang tv and radio, my cousin and I went to Mercury drugstore to buy some candles and batteries. Parang ni ransack ang grocery area due to alot of people buying canned foods, noodles, batteries and candles. I was able to buy some bateries for my MP3 though. The whole Saturday night, my mp3 was tuned in to JAM 88.3 listening to DJ Gang, Lambert and Steph. They become heroes of the FM radio. Most of the Manila people who were struck by the typhoon we're not prepared. Their only access to updates are in their MP3 FM radios and cellphone FM radio. While other radio stations played music, JAM 88.3 devoted their time answering calls for rescue and SOS from citizens. I heard alot of callers crying for help. Tita, sister, mother and boyfriends calling for updates on Marikina and Quezon City flooded areas because they haven't heard any reply from their loved ones.

I was also not able to sleep tight last night. I was thinking of my Labrador who was left in our Cavite home. Alone! I am worried that she might get drowned if Cavite areas are flooded too.

Sunday came and we still have no electricity. I spent the whole day at home reading a book and listening to JAM 88.3 for updates. Around 5pm, Hon arrived and I asked him to accompany me to find some candles at the nearby stores. Super dilim ng mga kalye and most people are also looking for candles dahil lahat ng tindahan ay naubusan na. Around 6pm, bumalik na ang kuryente. Everything seems to be in place and ok again in Makati residential area. My hon and I hurriedly came back home opened the TV and watched the news. It was horrible! 75 people are dead due to drowning. Families are stuck in their houses in Marikina and Pasig areas. Mud flooded areas are flashed in the screen. Alot of people are missing and thousands of families are now homeless. T_T

This is a call for everyone to help. Please be a humanitarian and donate to groups who are helping in the rescue and relief operations. Please help disseminate information and updates.

Are All Your Friends Getting Married?

As I get older, I realize there are fewer and fewer singles left in my "girlfriends" and "sistahs". Many of my friends are choosing to settle down and leave the single life. Although I claim that I will get to that point one day or I may opt to never wed, I can't help but feel "inggit" and wake up sometimes dreaming of my perfect wedding, planning the details and browsing through wedding magazines. This week I felt that I needed to research on options whether to get a Church Wedding or a Civil Wedding. I think these notions are just brought by the wedding plans that my "sistahs" Lucky and MheAnn are doing.

When you have these realizations, it can be rather shocking. I feel many things. I'm glad that I am not giving in and feels that I should be thankful I still have my freedom. Likely, I also feel as if I need to play “catch up” and get wed before they do. ^_^ When you think about it realistically, Do I need to panic if I'm still single and I'm still 4 years into going 30?

Ladies should wait until they are sure that they are ready to tie the knot. Sometimes singles will rush into marriage just because they fear being the only single person left. Sit back and take it slow.

Oh! Tie a Yellow Ribbon...for Pres. Cory Aquino

Everytime I see news and reports about the passing of a great woman... the first Woman President in Asia. The Great Woman behind Ninoy Aquino. The bearer of Philippine Democracy... She was a very special mother to her kids and to the whole nation. I can't help but cry and feel a great sense of "paghihinayang" at the same time a great sense of gratitude that I was able to experience an era of Philippine democracy because of her. Thank You President Cory Aquino. Please continue to pray to our Lord that He give mercy to our ill fated and corrupt nation.

Sharing with you a very special poem former Senator Ninoy Aquino made for her wife.

I Have Fallen in Love with the Same Woman Thrice
- Ninoy Aquino
I have fallen in love with the same woman three times
In a day spanning 19 years of tearful joys and joyful tears
I love her first when she was young
Enchanting and vibrant
Eternally new
She was brilliant, fragrant and cool
As the morning dew
I fell in love with her the second time
When first she bore
Her child and my
Always by my side
The source of my strength
Helping to turn the tide
But there were candles to burn
The world was my concern
While our home was her domain
And the people were my
While the children were hers
To maintain
So it was in those 18 years and a day
Till I was detained, forced in prison to stay
Suddenly she's our sole support
Source of comfort our well, spring of hope
On her shoulders fell the burden of life
I fell in love again with the same woman the third time
Looming from the battle, her courage will never fade
Amidst the hardships she has remained
Undaunted and unafraid
She is calm and composed
She is God's lovely maid

Under the Weather...

I am a little under the weather today. Sobrang sakit ng throat ko and lupaypay due to fever. Even though double dosage take of daily Vitamin C na ko, hindi ko pa din naiwasan ang magkasakit.

I know A(H1N1) virus is just around the corner but I know this is not it. Resting at home. Hopefully, I will be fine. Stuffy nose na... achoooo! Sniff sniff...

It really ruins my day everytime I become sick. There are alot of things I need to accomplish that I dont want to be in this position.

Medyu paiba iba kasi ang panahon. Mainit tapos biglang uulan ng malakas. Madami tuloy nagkakasakeet nowadays.

.The Art of Letting Go.

One of the reasons why people get so sentimental is because, memories are the only things that don't change...When everything else does.

There are things in life that you can't hold on forever; No Matter how much you fight for it. Sometimes destiny isn't always good, it becomes playful.

When you meet someone you learned to love, you thought that it was destiny who made your paths cross. But what if making your paths cross is just part of the game that playful destiny created?

Making you realize in the end that the person you thought that was destined for you wasn't really meant to stay....but only destined to make you feel love and leave you when you've already fallen.

It's not easy to state a reason when you decide to leave your love. Some might think it's just an excuse... some might not actually believe. Some will blame you... some might even be mad at you.

What they dont' see is the fact that....
It hurts you even more to hurt someone who doesn't deserve to be hurt. Specially when you can't actually state the reason why you have to leave.

You can never own something that was never yours. So let's stop gripping on things we expect will not last forever.

Nothing lasts forever. Forever is a lie. Everything is transitory.

So while you have something in your hand, put in mind that it's just borrowed. So that someday when it's gone, it won't take you eternity just to let it go.
When your feelings get strong for someone, it's always wise to stop for a while and give your heart a time to breathe. A time to use your mind to weigh the situation based on reason not on emotion.

Because the saddest thing that can happen is when one falls in love while the other wants nothing more than friendship.

Love can sometimes be magic but magic always ends up an illusion.

There are times when sometimes you wish that you were only limited to feel certain emotions. So that you'll never have to experience pain, never feel betrayed or dissapointed and never get your fragile heart get broken. But the same thing means that you will never know how it feels to love and be loved in return.

To have a heart that is whole but numb or a heart that is broken but real?

Someday, we will all be looking back to those days we learned to love, get hurt, cry and fight.

Maybe when that time comes, we'll be laughing at our old dumb self realizing how stupid we were to stand up for things we knew weren't really meant for us.

But I guess learning takes time, and mistakes make one's journey an adventure.

Life is what we make it. Love makes the world go round. So let's live, love and take whatever pain it brings.

.Hospital Visit.

My mom asked me to accompany her to the Hospital. She has been scheduled for an eye examination. Doctor says her headaches might be due to Glaucoma.

Researched online and found that Glaucoma can lead to blindness. Lord, wag naman po sana. :(

.Wake Up.

Time passes. Even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me. -- Bella, New Moon pg. 93
